White & Case Blames Low Attrition for Layoffs

White & Case is laying off 70 lawyers and 100 staff, according to spokesperson Nicholas Clarke.

“This is not a performance-based reduction,” said Clarke. “But there were instances where that was the case. There were also other factors involved, including seniority and staff utilization – meaning people laid off who are in practices where the head count is greater than the work for them to do. Two examples are securities and banking.”

Clarke continued: “Those factors, coupled with the fact that we’ve had lower-than-normal attrition — owing to a down economy and associates wanting to stay — has given us higher numbers.”

New York-based White & Case is a leading global law firm with 2,300 lawyers in 38 offices in 25 countries, and a total staff of more than 4,800. It was founded in 1901.
