Across the country, some people’s summer outdoor fun is being put on hold because of exploding patio furniture.

Every summer, there are reports of glass tabletops just shattering for no apparent reason. One second there’s a tabletop, and in the next it’s become a pile of little glass cubes.

Trick tables? Marauding bands of pranksters? Top secret experiments?

According to a reputable glass manufacturer, it’s something that occasionally happens to tempered glass, the kind commonly used for outdoor furniture, shower doors, and car windshields.

The material is specially treated so it breaks into little cubes as a precaution against cuts.

Spontaneous explosions are typically a result of either structural flaws that occur during manufacturing or modifications made to the glass after it’s been tempered.

All glass can experience a delay between impact and cracking, however, so what may seem spontaneous may just be a result of previous damage.

Self-shattering is a rare occurrence, and while tempered glass is considered a safe bet, you always have other options.
