Marvel Avengers Alliance is a turn-based social network game developed by Playdom, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. It was released on Facebook at March 1, 2012, and on Playdom's Official website at July 10, 2012.
The gameplay itself in Avengers games online consists of turn-based fights that pit your agent and heroes against one or more waves of three or less enemies, with each character having unique attacks. There are six character classes, each with a specific strength and a specific weakness to one of the other classes, except for the class Generalist, which has neither strengths nor weaknesses.
Asides from the existing version on Facebook, on July 10, 2012, Playdom released a version of the game on their own official website at Playdom.com. Certain features in this game like the Guilds system and Tournaments are currently exclusive to this version of Marvel Avengers Alliance.
Players take control of an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and can fully customize the agent by gaining experience, leveling up, and equipping their agents with various weapons and uniforms obtained within the game. They can also team up with up to two out of the current available Marvel heroes in the game, each with their unique skills and abilities. Players start with only a few heroes, and the other heroes are locked. These heroes are needed to be recruited first by buying them with "Command Points," a currency in the game, complete Special Operations, etc.
The Agent is the avatar of the game player in Avengers games online. He or she leads Heroes into combat as part of a S.H.I.E.L.D. Team. Each battle gains XP points, allowing an increase in levels. Each additional level increases the team's statistics, unlocks additional items to Research, refills the Energy bar, and rewards the player with 1. The Agent begins the game as a Generalist. Different classes can be selected by equipping one of the specialist Uniforms, as opposed to hero costumes. These suits have different stats and bonuses.
Heroes are part of the Agent's team during combat in Marvel Avengers Alliance. Up to two heroes can join in battle at a time. Heroes are recruited by using Command Points , winning PVP Tournaments, as part of Marvel XP Rewards,collecting Lockboxes, or by completing special time-limited missions known as Special Operations. Each has different Hero Abilities which may be used for attack or defense. Team-Up Bonuses are also granted for certain pairings.
Enemies are opposing characters in Avengers games online that are fought against in battles. They will often drop items during combat, such as Key Items and Supplies. Enemy goons are generically labelled with a rank, occupation, or capability. Mini-bosses and bosses are usually named Villains.
