Samoa Air Creates Special Class for Extra-Large Passengers

Samoa has taken their 'pay as you weigh' approach to airfare even further by introducing a special class for extra-large travelers. One row in the plane is now modified to accommodate heavy passengers.

There have been numerous horror stories concerning airlines offending customers with comments and inquiries about weight. In April of this year, Samoa Air strived to solve this issue by becoming the first in the world to implement what is called a "pay as you weigh" policy.

The system requires travelers to key in their body weight along with that of the luggage.

Now, Samoa has taken its innovative approach to airfare even further by introducing a special class for extra-large travelers.

One row in the plane is modified to allow heavy passengers to sit and breathe a little easier. The row has been lengthened by approximately a foot and is geared for those weighing over 285 pounds.

A spokesperson for Samoa stated “Once you're up around that sort of weight ... a traditional seat on any airline is going to be uncomfortable. Quite often the access is difficult, and even the space between the seats is enough that even when you've squeezed into the seats there's no room for your legs.”
