New App Lets People Swap Leftovers

Not as hungry as you thought you were? No problem, just snap a pic of the leftovers and post them on Leftover Swap. Somebody might come and get them. They might even trade you something for them.

Crazy as it sounds, this new app will let people do just that. It’s free to download and to post offerings, but the rest is up to you.

Clearly meant for the portion of the population that isn’t saying “eew” right now, Leftover Swap was developed to help cure many of society’s ills.

Food need no longer end up in landfills, less fossil fuels will be used, and the obesity problem might even be diminished if fewer people reach for a second helping and just give the excess away.

Not everybody sees it that way, though. In anticipation of the app’s release, San Francisco health officials took a moment to inform people of the pestilence that lurks in leftovers as well as the illegality of selling food without a permit.

They also reminded the public that regardless of how swanky the originating restaurant is, “it could still have been handled by some grubby hipster with no hygiene standards."
