China detains two on illegal buying and selling private info

A Briton and an American have been detained in China accused of illegally buying and selling private information.

Briton Peter Humphrey and his American wife, Yu Yingzeng, have been in police custody in Shanghai since July 10th for allegedly selling information to lawyers, multinational companies and financial institutions.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) SUSPECT WITH FACE BLURRED PETER HUMPHREY, SAYING:

"Sometimes the personal information we collected was done through illegal means. I regret this greatly, and I want to apologise to the Chinese government."

According to Chinese state media, their company, ChinaWhys, worked for many firms, including British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline which is also being investigated on bribery charges.
