Mother of gunman Aaron Alexis apologizes to victims' families

SOUNDBITE: MOTHER OF NAVY YARD GUNMAN AARON ALEXIS SAYING:

"To the families of the victims, I am so, so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken."

The mother of gunman Aaron Alexis is apologizing to the victims' families. Twelve people were killed on Monday when her son went on a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard.

The mother Cathleen Alexis did not want to go on camera, but she read an audio statement.

SOUNDBITE: MOTHER OF NAVY YARD GUNMAN AARON ALEXIS SAYING:

"His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know why he did what he did and I'll never be able to ask him why."

Alexis, a former Navy reservist and military contractor used a valid ID to gain access onto the Navy Yard. But now questions are being raised as to why he continued to have military security clearance despite his history of gun related charges and mental health issues.
