The Utah Department of Transportation recently announced that the interstate speed limit was increased to 80 miles per hour in some areas.

Sometimes 60 or 70 miles an hour isn’t fast enough when you have somewhere to be. Well drivers in Utah just hit the jackpot.

The state’s Department of Transportation recently announced that the interstate speed limit was increased to 80 miles per hour in some areas. The decision came after studies were conducted which focused on several sections of rural freeway.

A spokesperson for the Utah Department of Transportation stated “We had to look at geometry and speed ... speed-related crashes, just to see if it made sense. And in these designated areas ... 80 miles per hour is the optimal speed.”

New signs were recently installed on I-80 from the Nevada border to state Route 36. I-15 and I-84 from the Brigham City north interchange to the Idaho border also boast the new limit.

I-15 between north Leeds and Santaquin is another roadway impacted by the change in driving speed. The data from the speed studies showed that over the past three years, vehicular crashes have slightly dropped in areas with 80 miles per hour limits.
