A German security guard employed by the German embassy in Yemen is gunned down and killed as he was leaving a supermarket in Sanaa

Authorities say the attack bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda.

A witness describes what happened.

SOUNDBITE: Witness Faiz Ali Saying:

"Three unidentified men walked into the supermarket and chased him for about 10 minutes. He came out with a trolley with his shopping. Then the attackers fired at the supermarket's security guards. The security guards then ran inside, so he was left to confronted the attackers alone. They shot him in the chest and head and then they fled."

Al-Arabiya is reporting that the guard was shot as assailants tried to kidnap the German ambassador, who escaped.

Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has attempted to attack several large Western targets, including airliners, and is believed to have been behind a series of killings of foreign and local officials in the country since 2011.
