In their formative years, first-person shooters took place in large, open environments and usually pit the player against some manner of horrifying hellspawn. Painkiller: Hell & Damnation remembers those days and wants to bring them back. Inspired by classic shooters like Quake and Doom, Painkiller: Hell & Damnation is an HD sequel/remake of the original Painkiller, released in 2004. Players take the role of Daniel Garner, a dead man stuck between heaven and hell. He's such a badass, even the Angel of Death doesn't want him around. So he offers Daniel a deal—harvest 7,000 souls for him, and he'll let him reunite with his wife. For that Daniel, that means the killing commences. Painkiller: Hell & Damnation takes players through hellish landscapes, levels that feel pulled right from 1993. The game features over-the-top weapons such as the Soulcatcher, the stakethrower and of course, the Painkiller. Fans of classic shooters—their flaws and all—will find plenty to like about Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, a single-player first-person shooter. This video review features video gameplay footage of Painkiller: Hell & Damnation on the Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
