The hanging of a drug dealer was unsuccessful the first time, so Iranian officials say that once he is well enough, they are going to try again.

After the first 12-minute long execution attempt, the convicted offender was pronounced dead.

When his family went to the morgue to claim the body, however, it was noticed that the man was still breathing.

He was then transported to a hospital and is now said to be in satisfactory condition.

Since that announcement Amnesty International has stepped in, asking that the 2nd execution should not take place.

In a press release, a spokesperson for the organization said, “The horrific prospect of this man facing a second hanging, after having gone through the whole ordeal already once, merely underlines the cruelty and inhumanity of the death penalty.”

It’s estimated that Iran has executed over 500 individuals this year, but the ability of the punishment to reduce drug-related crimes has been questioned by an Iranian civil rights authority.

In addition to drug trafficking, offenses the country classifies as punishable by death are murder, rape, and kidnapping.
