Due to severe understaffing, residents in communities in and around Washington, DC aren’t receiving their mail until after 7 at night.

It’s no secret that the postal service is facing some serious budgetary problems.

Due to severe understaffing, residents in communities in and around Washington D.C., aren’t receiving their mail until after 7 at night.

The lack of adequate staff is causing the existing carriers to work later shifts, putting pieces in mail boxes after supper time, when people are commonly home from work and trying to relax.

Some residents are concerned about trekking to their mail boxes after dark, while others are upset that the noise of dropping items through the slot is waking up young children, who need to be up early for school the next morning.

It’s not just the homeowners who are affected by the mail schedule change either; many business in the area are suffering too. While some local post offices are blaming the dark deliveries on job vacancies, for other branches, its due to a start-of-the-day hourly change, as mail sorters are beginning their shift about 4 hours later than before.

The postal service hopes to have the problem resolved soon and claims to be currently training additional deliverymen.
