NSA intercepts Google, Yahoo traffic overseas: report

The U.S. National Security Agency has been intercepting overseas data traffic on Google and Yahoo.

That information, reported by the Washington Post on Wednesday, which said the newly disclosed surveillance program is code named MUSCULAR.

The report is based on secret NSA documents leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden.

The operation was reportedly done jointly with the British government and allowed the NSA to amass more than 180 million records recently in just one month.

Google says it's not aware of the program and its top legal officer said he was "outraged" by the revelation that data from its private fiber networks had been intercepted.

Reaction to the news, in cities like Washington and New York, was mixed.

"I don't like government agencies tapping into anyone's private information. It's private information by definition so they should not be doing it."
