Summer 2013 has been very busy for Hunter & the Bear. Having recently performed at the Hard Rock Calling Festival with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Kasabian, the London-based trio have been exposed to a large number of potential new fans. With a high demand for their material, the band is currently preparing themselves to unleash their much-anticipated debut EP Dusty Road.
It seems like the timing of it all could not have been any better. Indie folk-rock is the genre of now, led by the likes of the Lumineers, Band Of Horses and Kassidy (who have toured with Lana Del Rey and shared the stage with our own Hunter & the Bear at Live at Troon Festival 2013).
Produced by the band and Jamie Bell (Metronomy, Richard Ashcroft andThe Rifles), Dusty Road begins with a fast paced opening track calledForest On The Hill. Steady beat and groovy acoustic guitars instantly captivate the listener. Will's husky and soulful vocals take over, followed by Jimmy's and Josh's adroitly crafted backing vocals. These intricately layered vocal harmonies are a signature sound of Hunter & The Bear, and add a layer of sharpness and unsettling spirituality to the track. What comes next?
The North is a foot stomping tune, accompanied by strings flowing freely throughout the track, and adding an overall extra dimension of melancholy to the sound. The rich and multi- dimensional harmonies compliment Will's lead vocals and lift the choruses sonically to the higher ground of acoustics.
The title track of the EP called Dusty Road begins with soft acoustic guitar and is primed for nostalgia, sadness, memories and emotions to flow through the listener's mind from the word start to finish. The song beautifully contrasts with the final track on the EP called Talliesin, which is upbeat, up-tempo and brings positivity and hope back into the platter of emotions.
Self -released, self-guided and self-confident, the boys are all about the organic and rootsy emotion, which they have mastered very well. Their desire to affect one's mind and body has become monumental in their pounding, acoustic feel and combined with period cobbler, they're fresh, current and ready. What's their next move? They want to move YOU! Dusty Road out 28th October.
