Ozone is an area of Earth’s atmosphere from 12 to 19 miles above the planet’s surface that has molecules made up of three oxygen atoms.
It serves to protect life on our planet against ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Until they were banned, certain chemicals, like CFCs, refrigerants and aerosols polluted the atmosphere and depleted the ozone layer over Antarctica and other parts of the planet.
There are other indicators of ozone depletion that are not related to the large hole known to exist near the South Pole, and the level of CFCs in the atmosphere are not directly proportional to the size of the hole or how depleted the ozone layer is.
Based on research from several studies that measured the level of chemicals in the atmosphere and the size of the ozone hole, it might be more related to weather patterns that are moving around the ozone molecules.
