Resident Evil Is Dying, And Capcom Blames Old Gamers
  • 10 years ago
Today on The Rundown, we’ve got beef with Capcom. So let’s cook it. The powers that be at Capcom released a white paper history on Resident Evil, which just turned 18. They’ve complained that the series’s supporters are too old: “The main user group is now in their late-30s to 40s, and the average age is also going up as the series goes on with an increasing possibility that some percentage of the existing users will outgrow games altogether."Meaning? Capcom wants to shake Resident Evil’s fanbase. They’re trying to reach out to newer, younger players with things like Resident Evil cafes (yeah, it’s as weird as you expect) in an attempt to rebrand the aging moniker. The problem, however, is not the age of the players - it’s that the recent games have been poor representations of the series. Resident evil has become another over-the-shoulder, fire from cover and blow stuff up shooting game, following the formula of titles like Mass Effect and Gears of War. While those games are well-acclaimed, it’s because they achieve what they set out to do - Resident evil has been plagued by poor controls and a complete departure from its horror roots.Resident Evil 7 hasn’t been officially announced, but it seems the next installment will return to the series’ roots. Here’s hoping Capcom follows customer feedback like they claim they are.
