In this guitar lesson, Silvio Gazquez will teach you the cool intro from the classic song "Pull me under" by Dream Theater. Although this band has usually difficult technical songs, today´s tune is a pretty easy riff to learn. We always recommend guitarists to play chords and riffs before trying to shred. Rhythm guitar has an endless of possibilities, so let´s starts practicing!
Dream Theater is a progressive metal band formed in 1985, in the U.S. The original members John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy started to play under the name Majesty while they attended Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. But they dropped out of their studies to concentrate on the band, eventually called Dream Theater. In September 8 of 2010, Portnoy left the band so the the band started the auditions for a new drummer. Mike Mangini was announced as the new permanent drummer on April 29, 2011.
So, the example of today´s lesson is a nice guitar riff in E minor and it´s basically an easy melody with lots of open strings with a clean guitar tone. And for getting the right sound, it is really important to add some reverb, chorus and delay, something commonly used in the late 80s.
Ok, hope this helps and don´t forget to come up with your own ideas, which is the best advice for starting to find `your´ unique sound and style. That is all for today...
