Google unveils smart contact lens for diabetics

In this lab, Google is working on a new product they hope will change the way diabetics monitor their blood-sugar levels.
SOUNDBITE: BRIAN OTIS, GOOGLE PROJECT CO-FOUNDER, SAYING:
"We're working on a prototype of a smart contact lens that measures glucose in tears using a tiny wireless chip and a miniaturized glucose sensor."
The tiny chip and sensor would be placed between two layers of lens material and would measure glucose levels every second.
If successful, the "smart contact lens" could give diabetics another way to monitor their condition without having to do finger pricks.

"Our hope is that one day it could possibly be a new tool to help people with diabetes better monitor their disease."
Google says a lot of work still needs to be done to make the product a reality. It could take up to a few years.
