The artworks had been installed in a busy shopping district in Jinan city; on an exterior building façade. Two naked Buddhas were placed on the side of the structure.
One of the Buddhas was climbing up the wall, his back side completely exposed while the other smiling Buddha protruded from the building’s roof with his hands placed together in prayer form.
The sculptures were absolutely massive, leaving them impossible to miss both by locals and tourists. Once photos were taken and shared on various social media sites, it didn’t take long for them to go viral.
Some thought the display was funny but many referred to it as blatant disrespect for Buddhism. After the anger was made known, the sculptures were removed.
It’s believed the Jinan Municipal Bureau of City Administration is responsible for the dismantling efforts, but thus far no spokesperson has made a comment. Nobody knows who installed the sculptures or why.
