Clashes broke out in Manila Monday during a shanty town demolition.

Residents and protesters hurled rocks and molotov cocktails at police and swat teams who fired back with tear gas.

The trouble started earlier when officials began tearing down homes and shelters in The San Roque village slum.

About 7,000 families live here, some have called it home for decades.

The local government wants the land to widen the roads and say there is a relocation plan for residents.

But most people are reluctant to leave and fear they won't find work outside of the city.

This woman had been living in her house for 26 years.

They're using too much force, she yelled. They are harassing the masses.

Several of Manila's shanty communities have been demolished in the past year for infrastructure projects. This particular slum is about 33 hectares will be leased to a private company.
