Anne Frank's Diary vandalised: nearly 300 copies damaged in Tokyo

Hundreds of copies of "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank and related books have been found vandalised at libraries across Tokyo, library officials said Friday. The diary was added to the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Memory of the World Register in 2009.

Meanwhile, copies of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and related books were also found damaged at public libraries in western Tokyo, bringing the total number to 294 books as of Feb. 21. It remains unknown who vandalised the books or why. A library in Tokyo's Nakano Ward was the first to notify police of the situation.

The book is a collection of diary entries written by a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank, who lived in hiding with her family for two years in Amsterdam during the time of the Holocaust. One of the libraries said copies of the book appeared to have had pages cut from the bindings.

The Japanese government on Friday expressed disappointment at the incident and said the police will fully investigate the situation.

"We cannot accept it," top government spokesman Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference. "It's extremely regrettable and shameful."
