A NATO soldier was killed when the Taliban attacked a base in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar on Monday (January 21).

According to the Washington Post, the attack began when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near the entrance of a NATO base in Zhari district. Then eight attackers wearing wearing International Assistance Force-Afghanistan (ISAF) uniforms with suicide vests and armed with automatic rifles tried to storm the base.

Officials said there were a total of nine attackers including the suicide bomber. Eight attackers were killed in the gunfight. Two civilian bystanders, including a 13-year-old girl, were killed in the attack.

The Pakistan Daily Times reported that the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said the attackers had penetrated the base's defences in a "coordinated group martyrdom assault".
