A gas explosion in a restaurant near a shopping mall in Qatar killed 12 and wounded 31 on Thursday.

The deadly explosion took place in Doha at around 10 a.m. Qatar's Ministry of Interior confirmed that a large gas tank on the roof of a Turkish restaurant near the Landmark Shopping Mall exploded.

Quoting an official, Doha News reported that a fire started after the explosion but was quickly contained. The damage was caused by the force of the blast. The explosion was so powerful that part of the building collapsed.

During a press conference, officials of the Ministry of Interior said four victims died at the site and eight on their way to the hospital.

In Qatar, gas tanks must be inspected annually. It was not immediately clear why this tank, distributed by Woqod, exploded.

In May 2012, 19 people were killed in a shopping mall fire in Doha.
