An Israeli-American inmate at an Israeli prison was killed by special forces after he stole a gun and opened fire on Rimonim Prison guards on Sunday evening (February 23), according to Israel Prison Service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman.

It is unclear how Samuel Sheinbein, 34, obtained the weapon. According to the Wall Street Journal, Sheinbein opened fire inside a cell block restroom, wounding at least three guards. At least one guard was shot at close range in the chest.

After shooting the guards, Sheinbein retreated to a cell, where 90 minutes passed before police special forces arrived, according to the Wall Street Journal. A standoff-ensued, with Sheinbein opening fire, wounding three more officers, as police returned fire. Sheinbein was pronounced dead at the scene, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Sheinbein, a citizen of Israel and the United States, fled the U.S. for Israel after murdering 19-year-old Alfredo Tello Jr. in Montgomery, Maryland in 1997. He pleaded guilty of the murder in 1999.

Prosecutors said Sheinbein and an accomplice strangled Tello with a rope, struck him on the head with a blunt object and slashed him. They dismembered the victim and burned his body two days later.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "[Sheinbein's] case was a point of friction with the U.S. over Israel's extradition laws, which at the time afforded protection from Israeli nationals from standing trial in the U.S. for crimes committed there."

Instead, an Israeli court sentenced. Sheinbein to 24 years in jail for the murder. Israeli legislators later changed the country's laws to allow for extradition to the U.S.
