A tourist coming from Singapore is missing off Thailand's Phuket island after the man and a friend fell off the rocks at Phromthep Cape on Wednesday.

According to local reports, four tourists, aged in their mid-20s, were visiting Phromthep Cape.

They climbed down the rocks to take some pictures, when two of them slipped and fell.

One of the men managed to grab some rocks and stop himself from falling into the sea.

"Liu Shu Jian, 21, clutched onto a rock and his friends and people nearby managed to pull him back up," Rawai municipality mayor Arun Soros told the Phuket Gazette.

After being rescued, he was taken to the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation Hospital in Phuket for treatment. He reported minor cuts and bruises.

The other man fell into the water and was swept away by the waves. A local report says he did not know how to swim.

Officers at the Phuket Tourist Rescue Center were notified of the incident at 5:40 p.m.

After arriving at the scene, police and rescue teams started a search, but were forced to call it off at 8pm due to fading light and strong waves.

"A team of rescue officers was assembled and started to search for him. Unfortunately, the area is too shallow for Navy boats to get near," Soros said.

The man, identified as But Gao Yang, 20, is still missing.

According to Soros, the search will be resumed at first light tomorrow, the Phuket Gazette reported.
