There’s nothing that can tug at heartstrings like a reunion between mother and child and that pertains to both humans and animals. Recently staffers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park reacquainted a young giraffe with his mother and herd.

The reunion was heartwarming to say the least. The 3-month-old Ugandan giraffe named Leroy seemed to be thrilled to see his family and fellow giraffes.

He rubbed noses with the herd and even took part in some playful activities. Not everything was always easy for Leroy however.

Approximately 2 weeks after his birth on January 8th, Leroy’s health declined. He wasn’t eating well and appeared to be very weak. Fortunately zookeepers noticed the problem and transferred him to Safari Park's veterinary hospital.

Doctors soon learned he was suffering from a very bad bacterial infection. Vets didn’t think he would fully recover, but the calf had some surprises in store.

He was placed on antibiotics for about a month, given IV fluids and bottled fed 5 times a day by concerned staffers. All those efforts paid off.

He spent a total of 39 days in the hospital before he was deemed to be in good health. Once Leroy was discharged, he was placed in a restricted area of the Safari Park for additional, tender care before the very happy reunion.
