Hammer attack: Portland mother uses hammer to kill hitman sent to murder her

Susan Walters was forced to fight for her life eight years ago. She and her then husband, Michael Kuhnhausen, were going through a messy divorce, when he decided to hire a hitman to kill her.
One evening in September 2006, Susan arrived home from work and found an unknown man in her home.
Sensing the man wasn't making a normal house call, she started fighting him. The two struggled for almost 15 minutes.
She managed to get her hands on a hammer and hit him several times with the sharp end. Walters wound up besting the attacker, Edward Haffey, and the hitman died from his injuries.
Kunhausen was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for hiring Haffey, but he's up for parole in one month. Walters is unfazed and said she plans to take whatever steps are necessary to protect her life.
