Thirteen people were killed in three gun battles in Matamoros, near the US-Mexico border on Sunday (November 4). Two of the gunfights were between gunmen and Mexican Marines.

Local media reports that the first incident occurred shortly before noon on the Matamoros-Reynosa highway. Four civilian men and a civilian woman were killed. It was reported that the authorities seized two vehicles, a 2012 GMC Terrain and 2002 Ford Explorer, after the gunfight. Three guns, ammunition and tactical equipment were also confiscated

The second gunfight took place at 4:05 p.m. on the same highway, near a location known as The Hump. It was reported that the suspects attacked Mexican Marines and that the two sides engaged in a shootout. Four suspects were killed by the Marines. Their bodies were found inside a Cadillac Escalade.

The third gunfight took place at 4:20 p.m. on a road in Matamoros. Local media reports say that the Marines had ordered the suspects to stop their vehicle before the two sides engaged in another shootout. Another four suspects were killed in the vehicle they were travelling in. It is not clear whether the dead suspects were related to any criminal organizations.

According to Reuters: "[S]eeking control of smuggling routes into the United States, drug cartels have in the past few years been responsible for a slew of massacres, gunfights and kidnappings in Tamaulipas, giving the state the reputation as one of the most lawless in Mexico."

"President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December pledging to eradicate the gang violence that has claimed about 80,000 lives since the start of 2007, but parts of Mexico are still regularly racked by shootings and executions."
