Five members of the same family killed in Illinois hill-jumping crash

Five members of the same family were killed Saturday night after a hill-jumping joyride ended in a deadly crash on a rural road in Hamilton County, Illinois. The driver, Darrell Delong, 49, survived but is fighting for his life.

The family gathered for an early Thanksgiving celebration and some time around 10 p.m., six members left to go hill-jumping, an activity where drivers speed along long, straight, but hilly stretches of road with the aim of catching air off the peaks.

They were driving on a part of Anderson School Road called 'thrill hills' which Hamilton County Chief Deputy Jason Stewart described as being four hills, close together. After the fourth slope, the Chevrolet Trailblazer crashed, then rolled over several times with enough force to throw out everyone but the one person wearing a seatbelt. That man, 49-year-old Robert Parker, who was Delong's nephew, was found trapped in the wreck.

The car was carrying Parker's wife, Lois, 42, Delong's wife, Tammy, 35, the Delongs' 16-year-old daughter, Katelynn Fancher, and the Delongs' niece, Diana Wright, 23.

Delong was airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana. At the time of this writing, he was listed in critical condition.

Wright's husband, Sam Dorris, explained that hill jumping along 'thrill hills' was a common thing to do, and that he had done it himself. He stayed behind when the family left for their deadly ride.

Police said the crash was one of the worst in Hamilton County's history.
