Sperm whale explosion: Dead cetacean explodes after being cut open in Faroe Islands

A dead, washed-up sperm whale 'exploded' on a beach in the Faroe Islands on Tuesday afternoon.
Not much interesting normally happens on the isolated patch of the North Atlantic known as the Faroe Islands, a Danish protectorate. But a video from the islands showing a man poking a dead sperm whale's stomach has been making the rounds online.
The video shows the whale carcass exploding and spewing whale innards across much of the dock from a large gas pocket in the decomposing animal.
The unlucky marine biologist, Bjarni Mikkelse of the National Museum of the Faroe Islands, who was filmed poking the whale with a particularly long, sharp knife, escaped largely unscathed. He'll no doubt be spending the next few days trying to wash the smell off himself, though.
"The animal was more than two days old when we took it so we knew there would be some pressure on the inside, but nothing like what happened," Mikkelse told the Daily Mail.
Our theory of what exactly happened: the whale was holding in too many farts.
