STORY: Egyptians greeted the inauguration of their country's new president with street celebrations in some quarters on Sunday.
Former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in as president of Egypt on Sunday in a ceremony with low-key attendance by Western allies concerned by a crackdown on dissent since he ousted Islamist leader Mohamed Mursi last year.
Supporters of Sisi filled the street outside Cairo's presidential palace waving national flags and photos of the new head of state.
Last month's election, which officials said Sisi won with 97 percent of the vote, followed three years of upheaval since a popular uprising ended 30 years of rule by Hosni Mubarak.
But turnout was only about 47 percent of the country's 54 million voters, according to the election commission. That was less than the 40 million votes, or 80 percent of the electorate, Sisi had called for, and raises doubts about his ability to maintain popular
