Tommy Ramone, the last surviving member of influential punk band the Ramones, has died.

The band was founded in New York in 1974. Tommy was the original drummer and co-produced the first three albums.

The Ramones had been influenced by Lou Reed and Andy Warhol, but they themselves helped shape rock music. Many say they invented punk rock.

Rolling Stone magazine described the band’s music style as “urban surf music.”

Tommy Ramone had been receiving cancer treatment at a New York hospice when he died.

He was 65.
