Stunning photos of fire clouds looming over northern California were taken from an Oregon Air National Guard fighter jet.
Stunning photos of fire clouds looming over northern California were taken from an Oregon Air National Guard fighter jet.
NASA posted them on their popular Earth Observatory website, turning the shots into an Internet sensation.
Shown are the billows that resulted from fires along the California and Oregon border.
The technical cloud variety is called pyrocumulus, but most people just refer to them as fire clouds.
Just like regular cumulus clouds, heat lifts an air mass high enough to meet with cold air and condensation forms, except in these cases the heat source is a wildfire.
Fires in the border area have been raging for days. They also began in other several parts of California at the end of July.
Thus far, over 100 thousand acres of land have been destroyed.
The fighter plane view is of the Oregon Gulch section of the larger Beaver Complex fire.
Days after the photos were taken NASA detected that the clouds had already passed into Oregon and were headed for Montana and Idaho.
