Buñol in Spain runs tomato red as tourists flock to Tomatina

The streets of an eastern Spanish town turned red as Buñol celebrated its annual tomato-throwing fiesta.

The Tomatina has become a major tourist attraction, bringing many people from countries such as Australia, Britain, Japan and New Zealand.

Trucks dumped 125 tonnes of ripe tomatoes for an estimated 22,000 participants.

For the second year running they were charged 10 euros to help the town pay off debts.

The event was inspired by a children’s food fight in 1945.
