NATO summit: Rasmussen appeals to Russia

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stopped to make a brief statement on the situation in eastern Ukraine as he entered a two-day summit of alliance members in Newport, Wales.

Russia has more than a thousand soldiers on the ground in eastern Ukraine, according to NATO figures.

“We continue to call on Russia to pull back its troops from the Ukrainian border, stop the flow of weapons and fighters into Ukraine, stop the support for armed militants in Ukraine and engage in a constructive political process,” said Rasmussen.

Moscow denies it has troops operating in Ukraine. The day before the summit began, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a seven-point peace plan for the east of the country.
