Survivor of Islamic State massacre in Iraq recounts his ordeal

Twenty-four-year-old Mohammed Majul Hamoud is lucky to be alive.

He survived the worst known massacre during the war with Islamic State militants.

He was among 1,500 soldiers fresh from basic training who walked unarmed on June 12 out of Camp Speicher near Tikrit, where Islamic State fighters had advanced.

The soldiers thought they'd been promised safe passage by an army commander and local Sunni tribesmen.

Instead, they were led into a long line in front of the city's university, and then.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) CAMP SPEICHER MASSACRE SURVIVOR MOHAMMED MAJUL HAMOUD SAYING:

''They killed anyone who lifted his head. I saw women with them ululating (cheering) and cars honking their horns. I saw an elderly woman walk across the street…she came to the tribal chief and said: We know you. You are a good man, but I don't want you to leave any of those Shia alive. Kill them all.''

The soldiers were handed over to Islamic State militants who marched them
