According to Greek Mythology, this is the island of Poseidon and Kerkyra, after which the island was named Korkyra. Kerkyra's son was Phaiax, and it is believed that all the inhabitants on this island are his descendants. Thus they are called Phaeacians...

On top of the island, there are many castles designed in antic manner, and especially one was recognized as a bastion of European interests, and thus was heavily fortified in the 17th and 18th century. A lot of historic battles took place here, because of the island's geo-strategic significance.
