President Barack Obama says he is "grateful" for the Secret Service and the protection they provide him and his family.

His comments came after two separate incidents involving security breaches at the White House over the weekend.

"The Secret Service does a great job," Obama told members of the press on Monday (September 22) after signing America's Promise Summit Declaration at the Oval Office. "I'm grateful for the sacrifices they make on my behalf and on my family's behalf."

The first incident took place on Friday night when federal officials said Omar Gonzalez, 42, scaled a fence and ran into the White House. An affidavit, signed by Daniel Hochman, a Secret Service officer on duty at the White House when the incident occurred, said Gonzalez was carrying a folding knife with a 3-1/2-inch long serrated blade.

Then on Saturday afternoon, another man tried to enter the White House grounds and was arrested for trespassing.
