Australian police in security raids

Australian police raid homes in Melbourne in a crackdown on suspected radical Islamists feared to be plotting attacks in the country.

At least one man's been arrested.

But investigators said the raids in five Melbourne suburbs on Tuesday weren't linked to any threat to public safety.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER NEIL GAUGHAN SAYING:

"The operation today involved in excess of 100 of the Victorian Police and Australian Federal Police. The search warrants were the culmination of an eight-month investigation named Operation Hohensalzburg which began by information provided by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation."

The Melbourne raids followed similar operations in Sydney and Brisbane which authorities said had thwarted a plot to behead a random member of the public.

Authorities are worried about the number of Australian nationals believed to be fighting with militant groups overseas who could pose a security
