A 10-year-old boy in Alabama recently passed away from what police are calling an accidental hanging. Although detectives have not yet released the name of the victim, the family has identified him as AJ Underwood.

Just prior to his death, AJ had been at home, getting ready to attend a birthday party.

His mother called out to him, but didn’t receive a response. She went to his room and found her child hanging from a rope that had been secured to the top of his bunk bed.

She immediately got him down and ran outside where she yelled for help. Neighbors dialed 911 and reportedly started CPR while waiting for EMTs.

AJ was then rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to the boy’s family, he showed no signs that anything was wrong in his life.

Police Chief James Chapman further elaborated “There's absolutely nothing to indicate he did this on purpose. He had been in good spirits, he was making good grades.”

Chapman also said AJ was in the Boy Scouts and had been learning the process of tying knots for a merit badge. He confirmed the rope utilized for that purpose was the one used in the hanging.

The probe into his passing is ongoing. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
