Marijuana seeds planted in Chile

The seeds of change are being planted in Chile.

The first batch of medicial marijuana is being cultivated outside Santiago with the aim of alleviating pain for some 200 cancer patients.

Esmeralda Lopez will be one of them.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ESMERALDA LOPEZ, BREAST CANCER PATIENT, SAYING:

"What they are going to produce is a cannabis oil which is administered orally in a spray form and that is what is going to alleviate the pain."

The project is run by alternative medicine organization the Daya Foundation.

The seeds, imported from the Netherlands, will grow into plants set for harvest in April of 2015
