Earlier this year, police launched an investigation into the deaths of 25 cats in Yonkers, New York after the animals’ remains were found in plastic bags hanging from trees.

Now, a man is in custody in connection to the discovery. 60-year-old Rene Carcamo has reportedly confessed to police that he had been placing deceased cats in bags for the past five years.

According to him, the felines had died of fleas and infection. Police, however, said that some of the animals had been brutally murdered, as their skulls were bashed in.

Necropsies revealed that at least three of the discovered cats encountered blunt force trauma to the head. Carcamo said the creatures lived in his apartment with him.

His home is located on the same street as the trees that the felines were hung from. Carcamo claimed he placed the dead cats in bags and hung them so other animals wouldn’t be able to access the remains.

He is now facing charges of illegally disposing of dead cats and two counts of animal cruelty for reportedly failing to seek veterinary help for two of his kittens. Neighbors say Carcamo was known to hoard felines.
