Male and female brigades are working together to defeat the militants who have dug in to seize control of the Syrian border town.
But Islamic State is proving resilient.
Despite a coordinated bombing campaign by a US-led coalition, and the ongoing fight with peshmerga forces on the ground, the militants have surrendered little of their self-declared caliphate, pledging to defend Kobani street by street.
