STORY: Australian police stormed on Monday night (December 15) a Sydney café in the city's financial district where an armed man had been holding an unknown number of hostages since the late morning.

Video showed several of the hostages running out of the café shortly after 1500GMT, and a large number of SWAT personnel then entering the site of the siege.

A long series of loud explosions were heard and by 1530GMT medical personnel were wheeling hospital gurneys into the location.

At least three injured people were seen being removed from the site, including two on stretchers, one of whom appeared to be receiving CPR.

The suspect in the hostage siege was identified by police as Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee known for sending hate mail to the families of Australian soldiers killed overseas.
