As more states vote in favor of legalizing cannabis, the number of students using the substance in the last year has decreased.

According to the 40th annual Monitoring the Future study by researchers at the University of Michigan, teen use of alcohol and cigarettes has decreased significantly over the years, while marijuana saw a slight decrease of 2 percent in the last 12 months.

States like Washington, Colorado, Alaska, and Oregon have passed laws aimed at legalizing cannabis, but fewer students reported using it in 2014.

The study includes over 41 thousand 8th grade, 10th grade , and 12th grade students from 377 different schools.

Results show that after a five year increase, the number of students across all 3 grades that said they used cannabis at least once, decreased from 26 percent in 2013 to 24 percent in 2014.

People who argue against legalization claim that if cannabis is legalized in more states, more children will start using it because it will be seen as less dangerous than an illegal drug.

The number of students who reported daily, or almost daily use of cannabis also decreased over the past year from six point five percent to five point eight percent in high school seniors that participated in the study.
