Anti-Islam Movement Leader Speaks at Dresden Demonstration

The leader of a German anti-Islam movement said that his religious freedom was being obstructed by moves to limit the use of Christian terms during Christmas, at a December 1 protest in Dresden. Lutz Bachmann, the leader of Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West (PEGIDA in German), spoke to a crowd of about 1,000 people. Demonstrations took place in Dresden throughout December, with over 17,000 people marching on December 22.During the December 1 protest, Bachmann distanced his group from associations with the Nazi party. “The degenderisation of our language and the abolition of Christian traditions such as Christmas has been tried before. It is no surprise it was the Nazis who tried it.”
Bachmann also said that government restrictions on the movement of people who commit violence for political or religious reasons don’t go far enough.
This video shows Bachmann’s speech (00:00 – 06:25), scenes from the protests (06:39 – 20:30) and Bachmann speaking again after the march ends (21:35 to 33:01).
