Statues Believed To Be Michelangelo’s Last Surviving Bronze Works

Two bronze statues are believed to be the work of Michelangelo. If that does prove to be the case, the pair will be the artist’s only surviving bronzes.

Two bronze statues that have been living in obscurity for some time are finally getting their moment in the spotlight.

The sculptures, which depict men riding on panthers, are believed to be the work of Michelangelo.

If that does prove to be the case, the pair will be the artist’s only surviving bronzes.

This isn’t the first time the pieces have been linked to the Renaissance master.

In the 19th century they were attributed to the painter and sculptor, but that declaration was largely discarded as the works were unsigned and documentation was lacking.

Recently, a University of Cambridge emeritus professor of art history came upon a sketch that makes a good case for Michelangelo being the statues’ creator.

It was found in a collection of 16th century drawings done by one of the artist’s apprentices.
