Shooting the Elephant, Thinking the Elephant
World-renowned installation artist Yang Hae-gue held a solo exhibition "Shooting the Elephant, Thinking the Elephant" at The Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. With great reverence for the harmony between humans and nature, Yang uses the elephant as a metaphoric medium, which then becomes the overall concept of the exhibition. Just as its title implies, "Thinking the Elephant," we cannot find elephants at the exhibition hall. Instead, humans and elements of nature that hold it sacred fill the space, like a totem pole.
"The Intermediate" is a new series that the artist created. This series depicts the universality of mankind as well as its ethnic individuality. Also, "Citadella," composed of 186 window blinds, portrays a prohibited area affected by sound, light and scent. It signifies a challenge against the closed notion of communities. "Boxing Ballet" is comprised of "Sonic Figures" with six sculptures covered in brass bells as well as "Windy Orbit - Brass Plated" with electric fans and bells. By reminding us of the value of nature and tradition, the artist encourages us to revive our true values.
