Inside the Americas – Defending human rights defenders
  • 9 years ago
In-depth reports and analysis from our extensive network of correspondents throughout the region on the most important developments in Latin America. In today’s program we get a glimpse of a report just released by the rights group We are Defenders, which gives details about murders, attempted murders, threats, information theft and other dangers faced by human rights defenders in Colombia today. While it’s true that the number of murders has dropped from 78 in 2013 to 55 in 2014, death threats have increased by 133% in the same time period. These are directed against human rights and peace activists, as well as leaders of social movements, many of whom are involved in land rights struggles. Defenders are especially worried about the dangers facing them precisely when there appear to be advances in the peace talks and say there must be a change in their situation in order for peace to exist in Colombia. teleSUR
