Pope Francis washes Rome prisoners' feet on Holy Thursday

Pope Francis spent part of Holy Thursday in a prison in Rome.

The Pontiff washed the feet of twelve male and female inmates and a baby as he marked the start of Easter weekend in the Italian capital’s Rebibbia prison.

Francis reenacted the ritual said to have been carried out by Jesus on his disciples before he was crucified. The act was meant to show his willingness to serve.

He also performed a mass for the prisoners, at which he sought to give them hope.

“He (Jesus) did it for you, for you, for me,” he told the inmates. “For everyone with a first name and a last name. Because his love is personal.”
